- Have a list of things that you need/want to buy, and have a budget! Have your priorities, can wait, and buy later. You will feel better having self-control even if you have lots of money to spend and most of the time you will not regret spending less money! Having self-control is one way to discipline yourself and your wallet.
- If you're in doubt..most likely your purchase will be an okay purchase which tends to be the items that you don't really reach for because you don't love it. If it's a really expensive item I would just wait it out and think about it. You should find yourself asking Do I need this? Do I need to buy it right now? Is it worth it? Do I really like it? Would I be using this a lot? etc.
- Beware of sales racks and discounts! Most of the ads really lure people to buy things because of the "money that you save". Don't get me wrong, I love sales! But sometimes we tend to go crazy for the things we don't need because it's really cheap! Sales are ALWAYS there all year round but if you really want something, go with your intuition! Well think about this, Would you buy it even though it was full price?
- Try it on! Try the clothes/shoes/ accessories too! Some you think looks good on the rack might not look as good on you because of the fitting or the size or you just don't like how it looks like on you. Different stores have different sizing and fit. You think it will fit okay but sometimes we go back to the store and try to exchange it for another size, which is a hassle and a waste of time.
- Bring a friend with you and have fun! If you aren't sure of something, your friends are there to knock some sense and talk you into buying things or not. Be practical and be a smart shopper!
- Know the store policy! You just need to know if you can return/exchange an item, and within how many days, and if they do store credit/ money back. I've seen a lot of individuals complain that they can't get their money back because of the store policy. It's not the company's fault, it's yours for not asking/knowing.
- Keep your receipts! Just in case you want to return/exchange it. It is really important because I know some stores don't give you money back if you don't have your receipt, just a store credit and such. But to keep away from those kind of dilemmas simply put your receipts in an organized file holder with different tabs on it. Different categories: stores, credit cards you used, date of purchase, etc.
